What are American beds? Structure, size and Company

True to the motto "Think big", the American lifestyle  not only shapes  our perceptions, but also the furnishing and furniture design worldwide. The sumptuous beds, which are particularly popular in America, have been increasingly found in Europe for several years. Anyone who has always wanted to sleep in a huge, soft bed like from the American films can fulfill this dream. The most noticeable difference between American beds and conventional slatted beds is their structure. The bed system consists of several superimposed layers, the positive features of which add up and are intended to offer maximum sleeping comfort. Find out what is special about box spring beds below.

Conventional beds usually consist of a combination of bed frame, slatted frame and mattress. The special thing about American box spring beds is the layering of several mattresses. This creates a unique lying comfort and luxury hotel feeling in your own bedroom. This structure was developed at the end of the 19th century and was intended to help ensure that the mattress no longer lay directly on the floor (as was customary until then).

An American bed basically consists of the following components:

- For ventilation purposes, the entire box spring bed is on short feet. They usually have a height of 5 to 20 cm and the design is adapted to the overall appearance of the bed.

- The box spring (base, base mattress) consists of a wooden frame with many small steel springs and ensures the necessary stability.

- The top mattress is particularly thick (around 30 cm) and is usually made from barrel pocket spring core. Of course, the design and degree of firmness of the mattress can also be selected individually.

- The topper is the top layer of the construction. It is an 8 to 10 cm flat support that optimally supports the body while protecting the box spring mattress underneath.

What are the dimensions of American beds?

The terms queensize and kingsize appear again and again in American beds. The typical king size bed in the USA has the dimensions 76 x 80 inches, ie exactly 193 x 203 cm. In Germany, this means generally very large beds with a width of 200 cm and a standard length of 200 cm due to the use of the metric system. These royal beds are particularly interesting for people with a height of 1.90 cm or more who want the ultimate space experience.

American queen-size beds are beds measuring 60 x 80 inches or approx. 153 x 203 cm. In Europe, this generally refers to narrow double beds measuring 160 x 200 cm. This model is perfect for space savers who want to  set up a small city apartment and for couples who like to sleep close together.

The comfort lying height is 55 to 65 centimeters, which makes getting in and out of bed very comfortable. This also allows you to get up and go to bed without damaging your back. But if you like to be a bit higher, you can also buy a box spring bed with a height of 70 cm. There are also models with electrical adjustment. A powerful electric motor is used, which is able to lift and lower different areas of the bed individually. Each side of the bed can be set separately.

The design of the box spring beds

In addition to the excellent comfort that box spring beds have, the design also plays a major role. The bed system can have a padded frame and a nice headboard, which can be designed in different materials and colors. Other beds are completely without headboards. Even if the bed frame forms the basis, the color, the pattern and the material of the bed linen set the right tone! Whether Scandinavian, romantic or modern - with the right bed linen you can try out many different styles .

Bedding for American beds

A perfect box spring bed includes bed linen that is optimally matched to the dimensions of the bed. When buying your bedding, you need to consider the thickness of the box spring bed mattresses in addition to the design and material. For box spring beds, the mattress height is between 18 and 40 cm and the topper usually has a lower web height of 10 cm.

So that the fitted sheet fits properly, you should buy it in the correct size and web height. Fitted sheets are very elastic and fit different bed lengths and widths. But because both the mattress and the topper turn out to be relatively high, the appropriate fitted sheet should also have a corresponding web height. We recommend the fitted sheets for extra-high mattresses, which can be used to cover the topper and mattress with just one fitted sheet.

The fitted sheets for electric box spring beds, in which both sides of the bed can be moved independently of each other, are slightly cut at the top and bottom. With electric box spring beds, the bed can of course also be covered with two individual fitted sheets.
